What is SpaceCraft?
SpaceCraft is a homing beacon for Artists and Makers seeking a low-stakes space to craft, make, design, tinker, or shake! We are a conduit for culture and host consistent gatherings exclusive to members of our constellation that inspire joy, play, and community care.
What’s included in the membership?
So much! We host consistent gatherings focused on art-making, goss’ sessions, and even exhibitions.
Is it just for artists?
SpaceCraft was founded by an Artist, so we are for Artists first. However, we encourage anyone who seeks a creative and communal space to join our constellation.
Do I have to be based in Knoxville, TN to participate?
We offer virtual opportunities for members, who are not based in Knoxville. However, we believe the most optimal experience is best for those based in Knoxville. If you're not based in Knoxville and are interested in being a member, reach out to us in the contact form.
Does it cost anything?
Yes, the membership costs $50 per month or $500 per year ($100 discount). All programming is included in your membership. If you invite a friend, they would be subject to the public entry fee for the event that ranges from $15 to $35.
Do you offer scholarships?
Yes, we offer merit based annual scholarships to Artists, Activists, or Change Makers who demonstrate a desire to join SpaceCraft. We, also, offer a time-based membership for those interested in bartering their time or creative service. Reach out to us in the contact form to make a request. All scholarships are awarded on a case-by-case basis.
Who started SpaceCraft?
Jaleria Rivera is the Founder and Executive director of SpaceCraft. She is a Transnational Fusion Dancer and Storyteller, who incites meaningful change through creative and purpose-driven design. As a joy activist, she believes that raw enthusiasm is the gateway to collective imagination.
What is SpaceCraft’s desired impact and mission?
Our long-term goal is to become a members-owned cooperative, where each Artist has voting power on the evolution of SpaceCraft, its use of funds, and receives dividends based on participation. As a members-owned cooperative, we practice a more just economic structure under the pressures and constraints of capitalism. Our goal is to give ownership back to the Artists who steward, create, and spread the culture within their community.
What is a co-op?
Cooperatives are people-centered enterprises owned, controlled and run by and for their members. Cooperatives bring people together in a democratic and equal way. Whether the members are the customers, employees, users or residents, cooperatives are democratically managed by the 'one member, one vote' rule. Members share equal voting rights regardless of the amount of capital they put into the enterprise. SpaceCraft is in the midst of becoming a co-op. Stay tuned for more information on our bylaws.
What if I change my mind about the service? Can I receive a refund?
We hope this never happens, but we understand that SpaceCraft might not be the best fit for everyone. We’re unable to offer refunds at this time; however, you’re more than welcome to cancel your membership in your Beehiiv profile. We highly encourage you to share your reason for leaving us in the exit survey because your experience will only enhance SpaceCraft for the next Artist, who is inspired to join our cause.
What is the “Next Economy”?
SpaceCraft practices an economic structure called the “Next Economy”. It’s an alternative practice to the “Business As Usual” economic structure that perpetuates oppression, white supremacy, and ongoing neoliberalism. As a “Next Economy” structure, we practice a “bioregional, locally self-reliant, and racially just economy that works for the benefit of all life”. You’re welcome to further educate yourself on the principles of the “Next Economy”, or connect with our Founder about its principles because she is a graduate of the “Next Economy MBA”.
How do I get in contact with you?
You’re welcome to ask questions, share jokes, or send feedback in our contact form. We are happy to connect with you and respond to anything that comes to mind.
What is Geneva?
Geneva is a simple, modern platform similar to Discord, Slack, and Facebook Groups. It’s a space where SpaceCraft members are free to start conversations on any topic or purpose — this could be inviting folks to dance with you at a show, sharing your art for feedback, or body doubling with other Artists. More details about the server are shared in the welcome email post subscription.
